The City Council has agreed to give all city employees raises - effective July 1 - after a survey of other cities con-firmed Sunset's salaries were well below average.

Sunset Mayor Carol Bellmon said she's been concerned about losing quality employees - especially veteran police officers - in recent years because of the inequality in pay. She said the low pay scale of Utah High Patrol troopers reported in the media last year probably started the city's investigation."It'll be a real benefit for all of our police officers," Bellmon said. "All our employees ought to be pretty happy."

She said the city isn't going to be raising taxes to pay for the salary increases. It has simply found a way to be more efficient with city funds in coming up with the additional money. She stresses the salaries increases are not extravagant but simply bring the city to an average status.

Bellmon believes the city invests a lot in city employees and the salary increases should more than pay for themselves in the long run with more longevity and improved morale.
