The U.N. bureau chief for the New York Times will speak at a Brigham Young University department of communications symposium and participate in the taping of a one-hour discussion on "Reporting the United Nations" for PBS stations on Thursday, March 14.

Barbara Crossette will speak at the symposium on "Why America Needs a Foreign Policy: A Foreign Correspondent's Viewpoint" at 11 a.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.The lecture is free and open to the public.

"Reporting the United Nations" will be taped at 1 p.m. in the Larsen Gallery of the Harris Fine Arts Center. In addition to Cros-sette, other panelists will be U.N. official Shashi Tharoor and Charles William Maynes, editor of Foreign Policy magazine.

John Hughes, director of the BYU International Media Studies Program, will be the mediator.

The discussion will focus on how well the media inform Americans about the United Nations. The taping is open to the public, but seating is limited.
