The Salt Lake School Board may have erred in the way they handled the gay club issue. All they needed to do was restate and reinforce the justification for the existence of any school-sanctioned forum.
The controversy of gay clubs on public school campuses should not be an issue. Clubs are formed on the basis that participants are going to learn about and excel in a specific academic area. Any student wishing to join these clubs should be able to do so without prejudice as to gender, race, religion, political views or sexual preference. There is no academic involvement of any kind in a gay/lesbian club. Apparently they just want to socialize. This could better be done at a location away from the school setting. Sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, etc., are nonacademic issues and do not merit school club status.
