MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ranked 14th nationally, BYU lost to UCLA 15-2, 15-10, 15-10 Tuesday night on the first game of the Cougars' current road trip.
The second-ranked Bruins recorded 13 service aces for the match.
BYU (6-5) faces UCLA (10-2) again tonight before traveling to top-ranked Hawaii for a Friday night match.
WOMEN'S GOLF: BYU logged an easy win at the San Diego State Spring Four-Ball meet. Playing 27 holes both Monday and Tuesday, the Cougars finished with a team total 934, 30 shots ahead of the field.
Ai Lian Lim had rounds of 78-74-75 to win individual honors, her second tournament win of the year.
MEN'S GOLF: BYU finished eighth in Tuesday's final round of the Duck Invitational in Eugene, Ore.
Mike Henderson and Todd Pence tied for BYU individual honors with 221 scores each.
BASEBALL: BYU third baseman Ryan Roberts shared WAC Eastern Division player-of-the-week honors with Wyoming pitcher Rob Young. In a three-game sweep of Grand Canyon, Roberts went 7-for-12 (.583) and had a slugging percentage of 1.417.
WRESTLING: Three Cougars will compete in the NCAA Championships in Minneapolis, Minn., March 21-23. Gary Sanderson, who upset Fresno State's Brendan Buckley in the 142-pound division for the WAC title in the recent conference tournament, will be joined by wild-card invitees and BYU teammates John Kelly (116) and Mike Bolster (Hwt.).
Utah
WOMEN'S TENNIS: Utah takes a 7-6 overall record as it hosts No. 12 South Carolina in a 10 a.m. Sunday dual match.
BASEBALL: Utah begins its 30-game WAC schedule with a three-game series against Grand Canyon in Phoenix. The Utes begin with a 7 p.m. game Friday night, followed by a pair of 1 p.m. games Saturday and Sunday.
With a 10-7 overall record, Utah is coming off a four-game sweep of Mesa State last month.
Weber State
MEN'S BASKETBALL: Weber State's Jimmy DeGraffenried won the AT&T Long Distance Award for the highest three-point field goal percentage in NCAA Men's Division One college basketball for games played in February.
The 6-6 senior forward hit on 69.2 percent of his three-point attempts (18-26) down the stretch. Along the way, DeGraffenried established himself as the Big Sky Conference's all-time leader in three-point baskets made with 196, and finished his career as the second all-time leading scorer in Weber State men's basketball history with 1,624 points.
WSU teammate Justyn Tebbs was the runner-up to DeGraffenried for the award. Tebbs was 19-33 (.575) from the three-point line during the same stretch of games.
Southern Utah
FOOTBALL: SUU head football coach Rich Ellerson has named Jeff Hammerschmidt as defensive coordinator, completing the Thunderbird football staff.
Like Ellerson, Hammerschmidt, 28, comes to Southern Utah from the University of Arizona, where he served as secondary coach. As a player, Hammerschmidt earned All-PAC 10 and All-America honors as a defensive back at Arizona.
