President Clinton has quietly locked up the Democratic presidential nomination - even before he formally announced his re-election campaign.
An Associated Press delegate count showed Clinton - who was spared a primary challenge - passed the 2,146 mark needed for nomination by winning Hawaii's 30 delegates on Tuesday. The AP count showed Clinton with 2,154 delegates after voting in seven Super Tuesday primaries and the Hawaii caucuses.
The count includes several hundred officials who technically go to the convention unpledged but who party officials say are solidly behind the president. Campaign officials say they won't claim victory until they have enough pledged delegates.
