It seems Americans don't have three "squares" any more so much as one continual snack. Commercial sales of the crunchy kind of snack are growing, especially for low-fat items such as pretzels, baked potato chips and baked tortilla chips.

According to a Columbia University study, published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, of every $100 spent in the supermarket, $5.77 is for snack foods.The Columbia University study further noted that savory crunchy snacks are the most popular snack-food choices, followed by baked goods and fruit.
