SHORT-CROP RADISHES: All these varieties, when grown under normal growing conditions, will mature in less than 30 days.
- Cherry Belle - This scarlet globe is the earliest of radishes, maturing in about 22 days. It has a mild flavor and can be harvested when 3/4 inch in diameter. It was a 1949 All-American Selections Winner.- Champion - A bright red, round type, more pungent and a little later than Cherry Belle. This variety was an All-American Selections Winner in 1957.
- Sparkler - The top of this round, bicolored radish is red and its bottom third is white. The mild root will be mature at 3/4 inch.
- Snow Belle - A mild, all-white radish that can be harvested in about 26 days from sowing seed. A mild radish flavor, resists pithiness.
- Easter Egg II Blend - One packet of seed will produce crunchy radishes in three colors: red, purple and white.
- French Breakfast - This delicately flavored, oblong-shaped radish is 11/2 to 2 inches long and 1/2 to 3/4 inch in diameter. The skin is dark rose with a white lip.
- White Icicle - This slender, tapered, white root is 4 to 5 inches long and 1/2 inch in diameter. Its mild flavor deepens as it reaches maturity in about 28 days.
- ORIENTAL RADISHES: The following varieties are part of the longipinnatus group and are known as oriental or daikon radishes. In Japan, the entire plant is eaten. The leaves are chopped and pickled. The radish root is eaten raw, cooked or pickled.
- April Cross - This hybrid is a long white radish that can be harvested when it is 6 inches long. It will reach 18 inches in length and 3 inches in diameter before becoming pithy. It takes 60 days to reach full maturity and is slow to bolt.
- Summer Cross - The sweet, white roots of this hybrid radish are 12 to 15 inches long and 2 inches in diameter. The Summer Cross can be sown in late spring or early summer for harvest in 45 to 60 days. This heat- and drought-resistant hybrid is also tolerant of Fusarium wilt and viruses.
- OTHER TYPES, longer crop time: These varieties require 50 to 70 days to mature.
- Misato Rose - This radish from the Beijing area of northern China has a pale green-and-white exterior but a rose-pink interior. The turnip-shaped roots will weigh from 1 to 11/2 pounds at maturity, 60 days or more.
- Round Black Spanish - This globular black radish stores well and has crisp, medium-hot white flesh. It will grow to from 2 to 4 inches in diameter when mature at 56 days.
- Black Spanish Long - Maturing in 60 days, this hot radish will reach a length of 10 inches. The skins of both Spanish varieties must be peeled before the flesh is eaten.
- White Chinese - This carrot-shaped variety can reach a length of 2 feet. It has a mild to medium flavor and matures in 50 to 60 days.
- Sakurajima - This pure white daikon is a medium-hot radish that can be harvested when it weighs 4 or 5 pounds, in about 70 days. If left in the ground to maturity, it can become a mammoth 70 pounds.
- German Beer (Munchner Bier) - This large white radish is 3 inches in diameter and 6 inches in length. It is eaten fresh once its skin is peeled. 52 days to harvest.
