Ed White once told police he killed his 15-year-old sister because he "got fed up" and didn't think she deserved to live.

Four years later, the Utah State Prison inmate said he now feels only sorrow for killing Anja White."I wish I could bring (Anja) back, but I can't," said Ed White during a Board of Pardons hearing Tuesday. "I know I took a life, and I'm very sorry for what I did."

White, 23, has been behind bars since Jan. 9, 1992, when he called 911 saying he had just shot and killed his sister inside their Sandy home. He told one dispatcher he was "fed up" with his sister and tired of doing the dishes and the wash.

The two siblings had continuously fought for years. In fact, Anja White wrote a letter to her father just days before she died explaining she could no longer stand the mental and verbal abuse from her brother.

"If you don't make him leave, I'm going to. I'm serious!" she wrote. "Because I feel that if he doesn't leave now, one day you are going to come home and find one of us dead."

The unfinished, unsigned letter was found in Anja's bedroom and had never been given to her father.

Ed White also told detectives he'd been considering shooting his sister and the rest of the family since he was 12. He pleaded guilty to the slaying and was ordered to serve a five-years-to-life term.

On Tuesday, he told Board of Pardons member Don Blanchard that no prison sentence can make up for his sister's lost life.

"I deserve to be punished for what I did," he said.

Blanchard also heard emotional testimony from members of White's family.

"What happened that day has greatly affected a lot of lives," said White's father, John White. "I lost two children that day, a daughter and a son."

The elder White added he still loves his son and asked the board for "a good decision for family members of Ed and Anja."

Blanchard will now review Tuesday's hearing with the four other board members, who will decide on setting a re-hearing or parole date for Ed White.

"There's no doubt you'll be (in prison) for some time to come," said Blanchard.
