A semitrailer truck rests on a washed out section of Route 140 in Alton, N.H., Thursday after an earthen dam broke Wednesday night and sent a torrent of water down the highway, forcing 50 people from their homes. As the water rushed down the highway, a truck driven by Linda Sinclair was swept into a ravine. Rescuers found the truck but searched for hours without finding her. Sinclair's husband, Larry, was rescued after his semi plunged into a sinkhole created by the rushing water. Sinclair had been driving ahead of his wife's truck. "It was awesome," Alton fireman Stan Czech said of the flood.
