FORFEIT: Northwest Missouri State must forfeit 12 victories and vacate its share of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association championship because of the use of an ineligible player.
The MIAA said center Rick Jolley was ineligible because he played in an exhibition game for Penn State in 1990-91 before transferring to Northwest Missouri.
CASSIDY CANNED: Pete Cassidy, who recently concluded his 25th season at Cal State Northridge, won't receive a contract for next season.
The Matadors finished their sixth season as an NCAA Division I school with a 7-20 record. Cassidy was 334-337 overall at the school.

NO NEWS FOR MOVES: The NFL owners' meeting ended with no immediate solution on franchise moves.
There was no vote on Houston's proposed move to Nashville, Tenn., and no decision on Seattle's plan to move to Southern California. The Houston situation might be settled at a special meeting next month.
The only tangible result, other than an amendment in the rules on chop blocks, was a decision to experiment with instant replay during the exhibition season and, in a less visible way, the regular season.

In the Evert Cup women's tournament, Kimiko Date of Japan beat Nathalie Tauziat of France 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 6-3 in a quarterfinal match.

FANS RIOT: Disappointed fans threw rocks and bottles, set fires and stormed the field in Calcutta, India, forcing the World Cup semifinal match between India and Sri Lanka to be called off.
The crowd of 110,000 at Eden Gardens was outraged over Sri Lanka's dominance over the Indian batsmen. The players returned after 20 minutes, but objects continued to rain down, forcing referee Clive Lloyd to award the victory to Sri Lanka by default.
