A reading and discussion series featuring books by Utah authors begins at 7 p.m. Thursday and will continue at two-week intervals through May 23 at Foothill Branch Library, 1135 S. 2100 East.
Books will be provided before each discussion, led by scholars selected by Human Pursuits, cosponsor of the free series. Registration is required. Call 524-8278.Scheduled discussions are as follows:
March 28 - "Deseret Solitaire," Edward Abbey, a humorous chronicle of the author's experiences as a park ranger. The book also explores the philosophical challenge of preserving wilderness with the need for public access to parks. Robert King of Utah State University will lead the discussion.
April 11 - "Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place," Terry Tempest Williams, a best-selling work that explores the effect of devastation, loss and grief on the author's attitudes and her LDS faith. Allison Fernley of the University of Utah will lead the discussion.
April 25 - "Only When I Laugh," Elouise Bell, a collection of essays sprinkled with humor.
May 9 - "Angle of Repose," Wallace Stegner, the story of an Easterner who came West with her engineer husband in the late 1800s. The book highlights their marriage and struggles in a new land. Lisa Bickmore of Salt Lake Community College will be the discussion leader.
May 23 - "Desert Exile: The Uprooting of a Japanese-American Family," Yoshiko Uchida, a story of the internment of a Japanese family during World War II at Delta, Millard County, and other camps. Victor Aikhionbare, Salt Lake Community College, will lead the discussion.
