A man who was pushing the Rexburg City Council for the right to sell beer on Sundays has changed his mind.

But Rod Abramowski, manager of the local Albertsons store, now is asking that the city consider deannexation or scrapping annexation agreements with the only two stores where Sunday beer sales are allowed."What's right for one should be right for all," Abramowski wrote in a letter to the City Council last week.

He started the campaign for beer-sale fairness after Rexburg annexed two convenience stores on the north and south ends of the city and signed agreements allowing them to continue selling beer on Sundays.

Sunday beer sales are allowed in unincorporated areas of Madison County, and the stores had been selling beer for years.

Abramowski and other store managers took their concerns to the City Council twice. In response, the council voted to consider repealing the city's ban on Sunday beer sales.

But last week, Abramowski wrote to the council that he did not want to be responsible for selling beer.

"I still think it's unfair, and the company feels it's unfair," he said. "But spiritually, I couldn't do it. Why has this been on the books for 40 years? Maybe it's divine intervention."
