Mitch and Kim Olsen, along with 36 other parents, wanted to know why the drill team competition didn't merit more attention by our local news media. The answer to me is quite obvious. People don't really care. Aside from the participants and their families, how many turned out to watch? I would venture that not many did.
While it is admirable that these girls are committed to an activity like this, it is hard to ask for media coverage when they perform at sporting or other school events that can continue without them. I doubt there are many "stand alone" drill team competitions. The reason sporting events are covered daily by our newspapers is that people want to know what has happened in the games. Aside from this one letter, I doubt many others lost sleep because the results weren't as comprehensive or as timely as the parents would have liked.I hope in the future that the results will continue to be mentioned, but in the "people" section where those who want to know the results can find them - but certainly not on the front page of the sports section.
