Dick Cavett's career as a know-it-all television-show host hasn't been going so well the last couple of decades, so it's heartening to learn that the New York Times has asked him to come temporarily on deck to review "The Late Shift," the HBO movie based on Bill Carter's book about the rivalry between Jay Leno and David Letterman. Why? Because Bill Carter is a Times staff guy, and the rag wants to avoid any appearance of conflict of interest.
