Three cheers for the Utah Republican Party Central Committee. Finally, someone with some clout (be it large or small) has stood up for the common citizenry of the state, or more specifically the Wasatch Front. Whether we individually claim leanings toward the Republican Party or not, whether we live in the counties directly affected by the proposed "light rail" system or not, those of us who oppose the idea of having light rail shoved down our throats can all give a collective shout of thanks for their 66-to-10 vote for the resolution to stop funding for the light rail system.
Following the state Legislature's recent decision to not allow their own constituency the opportunity to vote on the question of light rail, this resolution stands as a beacon of light above all the biased rhetoric coming from the promoters and detractors of the system. I, for one, have never been, nor will probably ever be a mayor, governor, congressman or senator. But when faced with the overwhelming pressure from all levels of government both within and without the state and their agencies, it comes as a deep breath of fresh air to us commoners to feel that there is actually someone, or 66 someones, willing to stand up to those who wield the power and are already pushing ahead with all their energy to bring a light-rail system to our state. To be so short-sighted as to believe that we do not need to improve the existing system of transporting ourselves in and out of the metropolitan area would be a gross error. There is no question that we must go forward with any option that can be shown to be a benefit to the overburdened and out-of-date system that we now have. Let's simply get the truth, the facts, and then let the voters of the state decide.
