It took 15 years for Terry Kay to find a publisher for his novel about an interracial friendship in the rural South, but the wait was worth it. The Atlanta author of "To Dance With the White Dog" has signed a $1.2 million deal with William Morrow for "Runaway Child" and a second book.

Scheduled for publication in spring 1997, Kay's novel traces the friends' evolving relationship from their boyhood in the 1940s through the mid-1950s. "When you're children, you don't think about social issues and race," says Kay. "You're just kids."
