An Italian passenger ferry lies aground off the Mediterranean islet of Serpentara, 23 miles southeast of Sardinia, Friday. The Italian navy evacuated the 440 passengers and crew members from the Caralis, which spent the night stranded after choppy seas delayed rescue efforts. The ferry was sailing from the Sardinian capital to Italy when it struck a reef. The passengers, who were transported in small boats to San Giusto, spent a comfortable night because the ship's facilities were operating. The Caralis ran aground two hours into its journey. No one was hurt, and the cause of the accident is not known.
