Fast-rolling greens brought out the best in Patrick Burke and Jeff Maggert, who shared the lead after the second round of the Bay Hill Invitational on Friday when some of the biggest stars faltered.
Burke, dealing with the emotion of his father's death and a hectic day in which he forgot his yardage book and almost lost a scorecard twice, birdied three in a row and had a tap-in at No. 18 for a 6-under-par 66.Maggert did him one better by closing with four straight birdies in shooting a 65. That put them at 7-under 137 and gave them a one-stroke lead over Mike Hulbert and Glen Day.
Corey Pavin and Mark O'Meara were in a group at 138, while Nick Faldo was another stroke back after his 68 got him to 4-under.
Greg Norman was among five of those players who missed the cut at 2-over 146.
At Newport Beach, Calif., Lee Trevino and Jim Colbert were among five players who carded 3-under-par 68s Friday to share the first-round lead in the $1 million Toshiba Senior PGA Classic.
Also tied entering Saturday's second round of the 54-hole tournament at the Newport Beach Country Club were John Schroeder, Bob Murphy and Homero Blancas.
Seven more players were one shot off the pace, and defending champion George Archer shot a 1-under-par 70, leaving him two strokes back.
At Tucson, Ariz., Patty Sheehan was struggling in the second round of the Ping-Welch's Championship on Friday until some spectators got her started.
That was bad news for the rest of the field.
Sheehan, who had four saves and a three-putt for par in the first eight holes, birdied six of the last 10 to complete the round at 7-under-par 137 and tie Michelle McGann for the lead.
"I was left of the green on 18," said Sheehan, who started on the back nine. "I didn't have such a great chip and left myself a long putt, and some people in the stands started making fun of me, saying, `Well, I've got a 20-foot putt, but least I'm on the green. Hah, hah, hah.' So that set me off.
"I made the 20-footer and then I told them, `At least I made the putt."'
Still charged, Sheehan made five birdies on the back nine to card a 6-under 66. McGann shot a 68.
Danielle Ammaccapane matched Sheehan's score and was alone in second at 138.
Liselotte Neumann, who shared the first-round lead with Pat Bradley and Trish Johnson, was two shots back with Dale Eggeling, Catriona Matthew, and Alicia Dibos.
At Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez shot a 4-under-par 68 Friday and stretched his lead to four strokes with 13-under 131 total after the second round of the Dubai Desert Classic.
American Jay Townsend and Scotland's Colin Montgomerie were tied for second at 135.
