Gasoline dumped into a sewer line caused explosions in the basements of three homes but produced no fires or injuries.

The explosions Thursday night resulted in natural gas being shut off to about 40 homes for more than three hours.North Ogden Fire Chief Lynn Froerer said the first explosion occurred at 10:12 p.m. Another explosion followed within two minutes at a home across the street, and a third took place several minutes later at a place around the corner.

Emergency crews weren't sure what they dealing with at first, Froerer said, but soon discovered gasoline in the sewer line.

The fire chief said gas fumes can travel through a sewer line and enter homes where they can be ignited by gas pilot lights.
