By early March, 29,000 Utahns had filed their state returns electronically, exceeding the 27,000 paperless state returns for the 1995 filing season, tax officials said.
Only state refund returns may be filed electronically for the 1995 tax year, although the IRS will electronically file returns that have a balance due.To be eligible for electronic filing, a taxpayer must file a refund (not balance-due) return as a full-year resident. Filers must file state and federal returns at the same time, and it must be an original refund return, not an amended return.
Electronic filing is available through tax preparers who have been tested and approved by the IRS. The State Tax Commission will provide a list of approved transmitters to help taxpayers use.
