The federal government has awarded more than $1 million to help support crime-victims assistance programs in the state, U.S. Attorney for Utah Scott Matheson Jr. announced Tuesday.

Matheson said the Office for Victims of Crime, a U.S. Department of Justice agency, provided the money. The awards come from the Crime Victims Fund, which is financed by fines and penalties assessed against convicted federal criminals.

The federal grant given to Utah can be used to support victims service agencies, such as domestic violence shelters, child advocacy centers and rape treatment programs.
