A 13-year-old boy accused of bringing four homemade bombs to school and giving one of them to another student faces charges in juvenile court.

The teen apparently learned to make the bombs from a book about the Vietnam War, said Police Chief Lynn Excell. He said the boy was charged on Monday with possession of explosive devices in a school and attempted aggravated assault.Hurricane Middle School officials telephoned police after they observed him allegedly giving a bomb to the other student.

The bombs, which contained gasoline, flour, model rocket fuel and gravel, were wrapped in plastic wrap and tied into a bundle. They could have been ignited with a flame or spark, Excell said.

"Potentially, it could be quite explosive in a confined environment," he said.

After documenting the bombs with photographs, police destroyed them.

The boy was placed in the Washington County Youth Crisis Center and has been assigned a probation officer.

Washington County School District Superintendent Steven Peterson said a review process with the boy's parents will be conducted to determine his status at school, but it was expected he would face a year's suspension.
