The city of Murray is charging back into the past in demanding the UTA rail system use Murray electricity even if the service is not at the lowest cost available.
The electric utility industry is following the phone, airline and natural gas industries in providing better services through marketplace deregulation. It is probable that within 10 years, Utah electric users will be able to choose where and whom they buy their electricity from.
Instead of trying to maintain market control by political agreements, Murray should be looking at what it can do to reduce costs and rates in what is becoming an increasingly cutthroat business.
If they can't keep up with industry in the future, they might consider getting out of this example of civic collectivization.
