Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend, Phil James Herbert, age 64, passed away peacefully at home March 13, 1996, in Salt Lake City.

Phil was born September 25, 1931 in Salina, Utah, the son of Vaun R. and LaVaun J. Herbert. He married LaRae Harward, his high school sweetheart, 45 years ago, on February 16, 1951 in the Manti LDS Temple. He loved the gospel, and was an active member of the LDS Church. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a Master'sdegree in education and was a Fulbright Scholar to Padova, Italy. Phil worked for 32 years as an educator in Utah schools teaching English literature. He instilled his passion for poetry, Shakespeare, philosophy and nature into the minds of his students, children and grandchildren. He loved sports (golf and tennis), and spending time at the family ranch. Phil was a kind and loving individual, who was respected and admired by all who knew him. He emphasized optimism, beauty, love, and freedom.

Survivors include his wife, LaRae, of Salt Lake City; three sons and three daughters, Nancy Rae (Wayne) Sechrest, Highland, Utah; Susanne (Russel) Knight, Matt (Kathi), Holly (David), Christensen, Paul (Carolyn), Jonathan Vaun, all of Salt Lake; 13 grandchildren, Lisa Rae, Nate, Amanda, Christopher, Ryan, Michael, Justin, Chad, Daniel, Ben, Laura, Natalie, and Brenda; mother, LaVaun Herbert; one brother and two sisters, Gay Lynn (Jerry) Jorgensen, Lewiston, Utah; Douglas (Sandra) Herbert, Salina, Utah; Jana (Cal) Rist, West Jordan, Utah; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his father, Vaun.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 18, 1996, 12 noon, at the Canyon Rim Second Ward, 3100 East 3000 South. Friends may call Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Holbrook Funeral Chapel, 3251 South 2300 East, and at the church on Monday for one hour prior to the services. Interment: Larkin Sunset Gardens. Funeral Directors: The Holbrook Funeral Chapel.
