The first director of the Utah Division of Water Resources, Daniel F. Lawrence, 78, died Thursday, March 14, 1996, in Bountiful.

Lawrence retired in 1985 after 28 years with the Utah Division of Water Resources, created in 1967, and its predecessor, the Utah Water and Power Board. As director he oversaw Utah's water planning and conservation efforts, as well as the development and construction of water projects in the state.Well-respected by Western water officials, Lawrence was chairman of several regional water councils. He was also chairman of the Utah delegation to the Bear River Commission, which negotiated and ratified the Amended Bear River Compact.

Lawrence, who graduated in 1941 with a civil engineering degree from Utah State University, started his career with Utah water agencies working as an engineer with the Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Soil and Conservation Service.

Funeral will be Monday, March 18, 1996 at 11 a.m. at the Bountiful Val Verda 4th Ward, 2633 S. 50 West, Bountiful. Friends may call at the Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 N. Main, Bountiful, Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. or at the church Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at the Bountiful City Cemetery.
