A man in his 30s and a child were killed Saturday night when their car collided with an oncoming vehicle and then with a pickup truck on a dangerous curving road, police said.

Killed were:A male in his 30s, address unknown.

A female, age 3 to 5, address unknown.

Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Dan Jensen said identifications were not immediately available and as many as five other people were injured - three critical - in the multicar accident near 1300 East and 7600 South. The victims were transported to Cottonwood and University hospitals. The road where the accident occurred is near Sandy but remains in the unincorporated area of Union.

Jensen said the male victim was driving about 7:55 p.m. with three other passengers and the child, who was sitting directly behind the driver on the lap of a passenger in the back seat.

Jensen said after the initial head-on collision, a small Ford pickup truck then crashed into the two cars. Occupants of the truck and the oncoming car were in serious to fair condition.

"No one was wearing a seat belt in the victims' car. As tragic as it looks, this was a survivable accident," Jensen said. "I'm sure a child restraint seat would have saved a life tonight."

Jensen said the road has a history of accidents, where people driving northbound incorrectly estimate the width of the lane and swerve into southbound lanes and traffic.
