Firefighters evacuated 37 residents from the Salvation Army Drug and Alcohol Recovery building Saturday afternoon due to noxious fumes from an acidic drain cleaner.
No injuries were reported, and residents were allowed to return after hazardous materials crews neutralized the acid. The incident occurred about 1:40 p.m. when maintenance workers attempted to clean out an upstairs drain. The pipes broke and the cleaner started leaking, producing fumes that filled the building.
Some food stored in the basement was contaminated, Salt Lake City Fire Capt. Jeff Stansfield said.
