Thousands of Turks clashed with police in several northern cities on Saturday when they were prevented from traveling to a rally in observance of the Kurdish New Year.
Police in Dortmund arrested 1,300 Turks who proceeded with the rally despite a ban by the city.Elsewhere in northern Germany, there were angry confrontations as police tried to prevent Kurds from other cities and neighboring countries from reaching Dortmund.
Thirty-three people were arrested in Hamburg after demonstrators threw rocks at police at the main train station. Near Muenster, enraged protesters threatened to set gas tanks on fire at a rest stop.
