Five former first ladies of the United States are lending their support to the planned Women of the West Museum.

Organizers of the project said Barbara Bush, Nancy Reagan, Rosalynn Carter, Betty Ford and Lady Bird Johnson have agreed to serve as honorary trustees of the museum, scheduled to be built on a 20-acre site in east Boulder. The museum will trace the history of women in the American West, starting with American Indians, through Spanish colonists to later European settlers.

"This is such a wonderful collective statement by the first ladies on behalf of all women," said Toni Dewey, museum president.

"We are very grateful to each of them for their support of this most important project to recognize the role of Western women in the history of the region and nation."
