MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Hawaii rolled up the hospitality rug and handed the 14th-ranked BYU men's volleyball team its seventh loss of the season. The Friday matchup saw the No. 1-ranked Rainbows beat the Cougs in three straight games, 16-14, 15-10 and 15-10.
BYU freshman, Ryan Millar - the league block average leader with 2.15 - had three blocks and 24 kills.
Ingo Lindemann and Oswald Antonetti - both freshman - contributed with 19 and 15 kills respectively. Antonetti recorded seven digs.
Another weekend of road trips face the Cougars against Purdue and Ball State before they return to Provo for their next home match with Cal State Northridge, March 29 and 30 in the Smith Fieldhouse. Both games will begin at 7:30.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: Three singles and two doubles match wins were enough for the ninth ranked BYU women's tennis team to defeat No. 19 South Carolina 5-4 in Provo Saturday.
The win improves the Cougars record to 14-5.
The match points see-sawed back and forth during the singles competition with the score tied 3-3 before the doubles play.
The University of South Carolina grabbed victories at the No. 1, 2 and 6 singles matches with BYU winning the No. 3, 4, and 5 matches.
BYU's Adrien Alder defeated Tracy Kotseos 3-6; 6-3; 6-1 at the No. 4 spot.
Freshman Anna Bek and junior Angela Jewell were the other winners in singles for BYU each winning in three sets.
In doubles, Jennifer Saret and Anna Bek played the No. 1 doubles spot and defeated the USC combo of Rakic/Regnier 8-6 in a proset match.
USC won the No. 2 doubles match, and BYU won the No. 3 match to make the final score 5-4.
The Cougars finish their home dual match season on Tuesday hosting 25th-ranked Clemson at 4 p.m., in the indoor courts, just south of the Smith Fieldhouse.
MEN'S TENNIS: BYU's men's tennis team finished the last day of the US West Cellular Tennis Classic Saturday defeating Virginia Tech 4-3 for third place in the tournament.
The Cougars, who are now 9-6 overall, won all three proset doubles matches to put them up 1-0 against Virginia Tech.
The doubles point was critical for BYU since the team split the singles competition with Virginia Tech.
At the No. 1 position, Boris Bosnjakovic improved the Cougar's lead to 2-0 with his 6-3, 7-6 defeat over Virginia Tech's Oliver Mayo. Mayo is currently ranked 71st in the nation.
Other wins for BYU came from Kris Rosander and Kengo Usui. Rosander defeated Andrew Kraft 7-6, 6-4, and Usui brought the Cougars to a 4-1 lead with his 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Pablo Schurig.
BYU's Manuel Calvo suffered a disappointing 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 loss to Aaron Marchetti, who is ranked 60th in the nation. VTU's second and third wins came against BYU's David White and Jason Hardin. Both matches were taken to three sets.
The Cougars have one week off before they travel to northern California to battle San Jose State, California and Stanford March 25-27.
BASEBALL: The No. 1-ranked Cal State Fullerton baseball team proved worthy of its top ranking Friday in Fullerton, Calif., overpowering the BYU baseball team, 10-0.
BYU (12-9) couldn't find an answer for Fullerton's (20-2) pitching and hitting. Titan pitchers allowed only three hits in the shutout holding the Cougars hitless until the top of the fifth inning when D.G. Nelson singled off Fullerton starter Brent Billingsley.
Scott Haws suffered his first loss of the season.
The only other offense for BYU came from Glen Spencer and Tyson Dowdell. Spencer doubled in the ninth inning and was the only Cougar to reach second base in the game. Dowdell added a single in the eighth.
Southern Utah
TRACK & FIELD: Amy Ballard set a school record and Layne Richards came within a hair of another as the two helped Southern Utah University's track team to five individual titles at the UNLV Desert Classic track meet Saturday.
Ballard, a sophomore from Grand Junction, Colo., broke her own SUU mark in the discus with an effort of 145 feet, 7 inches, nearly 18 feet better than her closest competition as the SUU women compiled 54 points to finish behind Idaho State and host UNLV but ahead of Texas .
Meanwhile, Richards' pole vault effort of 16-5 was just an inch shy of the SUU record set by Bruce Bryan in 1980 and 11 inches better than Idaho State's Eric Bell, who finished in second place. Richards, a sophomore from Carson City, Nev., also finished second in the long jump with an effort of 21-6.25 as the SUU men finished second to ISU in the overall competition, 88-49.
Ted Hanson, Taurus Jackson and Daniel Ibarra also notched first-place finishes for the Thunderbirds, Hanson in the 1500-meters (4:06.33), Jackson in the 100-meters (10.94) and Ibarra in the 800-meters (1:59.36) as SUU went 1-3-4 in the 800, with Hanson finishing third and Daniel Torpe fourth.
Among women runners, Shelly Richards finished second in the 100m hurdles at 14.36.
SOFTBALL: Southern Utah dropped a doubleheader to Western Athletic Conference foe Sacramento State, 6-1 and 5-0, Saturday afternoon in Sacramento, Calif.
The Thunderbirds never got the bats going all afternoon and managed only two hits in the first game.
Southern Utah is now 7-12 overall and 0-4 in the WAC. The two wins move Sacramento State to 12-10 overall, and 3-1 in the WAC.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: In the second round of the Fifth Annual Titan Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton, Southern Utah was defeated by Nebraska, 5-1 Saturday afternoon.
SUU's only win of the day came as a result of a Cornhusker default in the number six singles spot, thus giving the Thunderbirds' Amy Hall the win.
