What not to say

Words wound. That's the experience of women and men who have encountered infertility. They urge other people, especially those who have children, to pick their questions and comments with care.Don't broach the subject, unless the person with infertility initiates the conversation. Understand how they feel, that no one who's not in their situation can truly grasp the frustration and longing. Offer encouragement and support.

But never say:

- To a childless couple:

"So when are you going to have kids?"

"Just relax, you're trying too hard."

"This is going to teach you patience."

"Get a puppy."

"You don't know how lucky you are."

"This must be God's plan."

"Are you childless by choice?"

- To the man in a childless marriage:

"Shooting blanks?"

"Got wimpy sperm?"
