Utah junior forward Keith Van Horn was named WAC player of the year for the second consecutive season, while first-year Fresno State coach Jerry Tarkanian was named WAC coach of the year in a poll of the media conducted by the Fresno Bee.
Van Horn earned 22 votes, with the other three going to Fresno State junior guard Dominick Young. Tarkanian earned 13 votes, beating out New Mexico's Dave Bliss with seven votes. San Diego State's Fred Trenkle had four votes and Utah coach Rick Majerus one.Van Horn and Young were joined by New Mexico junior guard Charles Smith, Hawaii senior guard Anthony Harris and Brigham Young senior forward Kenneth Roberts on the all-WAC first team.
Wyoming sophomore guard LaDrell Whitehead, Fresno State junior guard Kendric Brooks, Utah senior guard Brandon Jessie, Colorado State senior guard David Evans and New Mexico freshman forward Kenny Thomas were named to the all-WAC second team.
Utah's Mark Rydalch was named the league's top sixth man for the second consecutive season, and UTEP senior guard Mark Ingles was named the conference's Unsung Player. Brooks, a transfer from Hartnell College in California, was the WAC Newcomer of the Year, while Thomas was Freshman of the Year.
Brooks, Thomas, BYU junior forward Bryon Ruffner, SDSU's Paul Jarrett and SDSU freshman guard Raymond "Circus" King were named to the all-Newcomer team. Young, Whitehead, Jessie, Wyoming's HL Coleman and CSU center Joe Vogel were named to the all-WAC defensive team.
