Aldon J. Anderson, 79, former U.S. District Court judge for Utah, died March 24, 1996, at his Salt Lake home.
Judge Anderson was appointed a federal district judge in 1971 and became chief judge for the district of Utah in 1978. He became a senior judge Dec. 20, 1984.A 1937 graduate of the University of Utah, he received his law degree from the U. in 1943 and began his legal career with the Utah State Tax Commission. He began private law practice in 1945.
He was elected a 3rd District attorney in 1952 and re-elected in 1956. He served as president of the District Attorneys Association during several of those years. He was appointed a 3rd District Judge in 1957 and was president and presiding judge of the State District Judges Association and presiding judge of the Family Court Division of the 3rd District Court.
While serving as a federal district judge he served a term as president of the U.S. District Judges Association for the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals. Judge Anderson helped establish the American Inns of Court and served as first chairman of the United States Inn of Court Foundation. The Aldon J. Anderson Inn of Court was named in his honor.
He had served as a high councilor and was first and second counselor in two stake presidencies of East Mill Creek Stake. Earlier, he was first counselor in the Rosecrest Ward and served in the British Mission from 1937 to 1939. He had served on the Sunday School General Board and as a member of the Adult Correlation Committee of the church.
Funeral services will be held at noon Friday in the Monument Park North Stake Center, 1320 S. Wasatch Drive. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 E. 1300 South, and from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Waasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
