The Ogden-Hinckley Airport has received a federal grant of $193,000 to modernize baggage handling and security systems.
The grant was obtained through the efforts of Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah. "This money will allow Ogden-Hinckley Airport to fulfill its role as a reliever airport for the Salt Lake International Airport. This is extremely important as air traffic into Utah continually increases in preparation for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games," said Bennett. The grant will go to phase one of the terminal expansion, along with a grant of $9,600 from the Utah State Transportation Department and matching funds of $9,600 from Ogden City. Construction is scheduled for completion in October.
The installation of the new baggage handling and security systems will complete passenger security requirements of the Federal Aviation Administration. Passengers will now be able to leave the plane when airplanes diverted to Ogden from Salt Lake City are refueled for continuation of their flight.
"The Ogden-Hinckley Airport is the second most active airport in Utah," said Ogden Mayor Glenn J. Mecham.
