An open house and tours of the Salt Lake Hardware Building, 105 N. 400 West, recently renovated and near fully leased, is scheduled Saturday, May 11, from noon to 4 p.m.
The office building was rededicated Friday at noon ceremonies.Built of red brick and wood by W. H. Lepper in 1908 for Benjamin F. Bauer and Henry A. Schweikhart as a major regional hardware distribution center, the building is now owned by Gastronomy Inc., a company that owns several restaurants and has spent millions of dollars refurbishing the historic building.
The building sat idle for many years and then was little used until Gastronomy purchased it and started the renovation as tenants expressed a desire to occupy the space.
Commercial Contract Group was the first tenant in the building, occupying a portion on the first floor. Last November, Certified Vacations, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., leased the entire 45,000 square-foot second floor. The upper three floors are gradually being occupied by American Stores employees.
Williams said the historical integrity of the building has been maintained as evidenced by retention of the metal slide used to transport hardware items from the top floors to the lower floors, the windows and some skylights.
