With three months to go before his candidacy is officially ratified, Bob Dole's presidential campaign already has the smell of disaster.

Even granting that a month can be a year in politics, the booming economy, an inept performance by congressional Republicans, his own refusal to give up the majority leader's role to run full-time, his age and an opponent who seems to come alive at campaign time combine to make the Kansas senator one of the longest of longshots.Forty years ago, when Bob Dole entered politics, a man of Bill Clinton's character could not have been elected.
