SHERIFF'S OFFICE PLANS WEEKLONG DISPLAYS, EVENTS

In celebration of Law Enforcement Week, the Salt Lake County Sheriff's office will sponsor displays and activities every day at the Cottonwood Mall.

The week (which runs May 13-17) will include displays featuring the SWAT team, police dogs, and the sheriff's helicopter. Activities begin at 10 a.m. and run until 9 p.m. Parts of these displays will also be at the Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City.In addition to showing off equipment and programs that citizens are probably familiar with, the sheriff's office will unveil a new program called "Operation Safe Car."

The program will make it easier for police officers to find stolen vehicles. Citizens sign up to allow police officers to stop their car if it's being driven between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.

The cars will be marked with a special decal in the back window, and officials say it's had a successful debut in states such as Texas and Arizona.
