LAS VEGAS RALLIES FOR 7-5 VICTORY THANKS TO DEER'S THREE-RUN SHOT

Rob Deer had a home run and four RBIs as the Las Vegas Stars defeated the Salt Lake Buzz 7-5 Sunday in the Pacific Coast League.

The Stars trailed 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Deer hit a three-run homer with one out off losing pitcher Phil Stidham (0-1).Las Vegas gained the lead in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Mike Sharperson and a sacrifice fly by Deer. Sharperson had two RBIs.

Joey Long (1-0) got the victory with two innings of scoreless relief. He did not allow a hit.

Ron Villone pitched a scoreless ninth, with two strikeouts, to earn his second save.

Salt Lake had taken the lead on a three-run fourth inning. The Buzz began with three consecutive singles off Las Vegas starter Denny Harriger, who walked Chris Latham to force in a run. Mitch Simons followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. Brian Raabe, who had three hits, drove in the third run with a single.

The Buzz made it 5-1 in the fifth on RBI singles by Jamie Ogden and Latham. Ogden and Jeff Horn each had three hits for Salt Lake.
