BIRD-WATCHERS HEADING FOR CORE OF THE BIG APPLE

John Flicker has gone bird-watching all over the country but never in the middle of New York City.

Flicker, president of the National Audubon Society, was planning to begin a bird-watching expedition Monday deep into the heart the city's oasis of green. It's all part of the society's annual Birdathon, in which bird-watchers collect pledges from supporters based on the number of species they identify.

"Central Park is a magnet that attracts birds as they travel up the East Coast and need to stop," he said.
