Small groups of rebels with grenade launchers and submachine guns staged more than a dozen raids Monday on Russian positions in the ruined Chechen capital.
Russia's military command said one Russian serviceman was killed and nine were wounded. It gave no information on separatist casualties. The fighting in Chechnya has intensified ahead of the planned visit later this month by Boris Yeltsin, the first by the Russian president since he sent troops into the breakaway republic in December 1994. Yeltsin is under pressure to get peace talks started before presidential elections in June.
But both the planned trip and the peace initiative are meeting a cool response.
On Sunday, rebel leader Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev said he would view Yeltsin's visit as a "violation of the border regime."
