Following the footsteps of possible 1996 Olympian Casey Bryan, who once trained at USA Gymnastics World, 13-year-old Sterling Richards of Woods Cross won the all-around title (49.15 score) in the under-14 age group last weekend at the Junior National Championships in Tulsa, Okla. It's the same meet-title Bryan used to vault to national prominence.
His USA Gymnastics World team took the Class III championship in that age division.Several members of USA Gymnastics World's Class II (age 14-15) team also did well in the meet, which is supposed to be televised June 3 by Prime Sports.
Others on the Class III championship team were Will Becker of Salt Lake, who ranked fifth all-around and is a member of the national junior team with Richards, and Brett Huish of Orem, who placed 19th. On the Class II team, Beau Bailey of Kaysville took third in vault and tied for 62nd out of 178 in all-around with teammate Max Moffat of Salt Lake City. Chris Hart of Kaysville took third on parallel bars, and Matt Smith of Sandy was 69th all-around.
Richards, son of Nora and Willard Richards, attends Millcreek Junior High, is coached at USA Gymnastics by John Curtin and Chris Leech. He has trained there since he was 4, and he has been a member of the national junior team for four years.
