Pope John Paul II touches the face of Muzeyyen Agca, mother of the Turkish man who shot him in 1981. Muzeyyen Agca is seeking a pardon for her son from the Italian government. A Vatican statement said the pope told the woman he was "close to her worries" and assured her of a place in his prayers. Mehmet Ali Agca, who is serving a life sentence for the shooting in St. Peter's Square on May 13, 1981, is expected to make a formal request for a state pardon next month. The Vatican has indicated it will not formally respond to the plea and is skeptical about Mehmet Agca's repentance.
