President Clinton opened a new front Thursday in his election-year battle against economic anxiety, turning the White House into a bully pulpit to spotlight the issue of corporate responsibility. Clinton played host at a White House breakfast to 100 business executives in Washington for a series of roundtable discussions on the theme of good corporate citizenship. Invited to the event were executives from companies that have excelled at creating family-friendly workplaces, offering generous health care and retirement benefits or upgrading workers' skills. Republicans called the White House event nothing more than a campaign gimmick.
