Only two days after surviving a three-team tiebreaker just to make the playoffs, the Layton Lancers proved they mean business by stunning top-ranked and defending state champion Viewmont 2-1 Thursday.

On the Vikings' homefield, Layton forward Curt Whitesides pounded away from the front line to score both goals. A first-half goal was the only scoring before halftime. Then Viewmont's Jamie Knight tied the game early in the second half.Whitesides second goal came with seven minutes left on a sweeping shot from behind the 18-yard boxline. "It was a smoker of a shot," Layton coach Lynn Kofoed said. "It hit so hard it hit the left side of the net after striking the right post."

Defensively the Lancers were solid with goalkeeper David Rognon taming the Vikes. Adding more resistance in front of the net was stopper Dustin Stettler, earning the praise of Kofoed.

Layton will now play Bingham in Tuesday's quarterfinal at Mountain View.
