Defending champion Union is just two wins away from repeating its reign in 3A softball. The Cougars enter the final day of state play as the only unbeaten squad left in the tournament.

Union can lock up the title with victories over Emery and Richfield or Uintah. The Wildcats and Utes will meet to determine what may yield the other finalist. Play begins at 11 a.m. with later contests slated for 1 p.m. and, if necessary, at 4.The field was reduced to four Friday after seven games were played.

Third round

Union 4, Richfield 2: Tammy Nielson doubled twice as the Cougars topped the Wildcats. Union outhit Richfield 13-6.

Second round

Richfield 2, Emery 0: The Wildcats blanked the Spartans after scoring in the first and third innings.

Union 9, North Sanpete 8: The Hawks overcame a 6-1 deficit in their last at-bat, but fell victim to a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh. The wild contest featured 21 hits and three home runs.

Elimination games

Uintah 13, North Sanpete 3: Bonnie Hatch homered and Cheridan Horrocks tripled in leading the Utes past the Hawks.

Emery 7, Snow Canyon 6: The Spartans broke a seesaw affair with a run in the top of the seventh. The setback eliminated the Region 9 champion Warriors.

Snow Canyon 8, Hurricane 2: The Warriors dispatched the Tigers with six runs in the bottom of the fifth - the final inning played because of the time rule.

Uintah 8, Dixie 5: A seven-run fourth inning lifted the Utes past the Flyers. The teams combined for seven extra-base hits.
