DEATH: MELVA L. HARDCASTLE SHIELDS

Melva Leona Hardcastle Shields (Grandma Lou), 85, passed away May 16, 1996 at her home in Holladay, Utah from causes incident to age.

Born June 13, 1910 in Sandy City, Utah to Albert Hardcastle and Sophia Gunderson. Married David Nile Shields on August 20, 1930 in Salt Lake City; later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They made their home in South Jordan, Utah where they resided for 44 years.Melva graduated from Jordan High School in 1928, where she was elected studentbody vice president. She attended LDS Business College. Active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She gave many years of church service to Primary, Young Women's and Relief Society organizations serving in both leadership and teaching capacities. She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. She served faithfully the last 12 years of her life as a volunteer for the 2nd graders of Holladay Elementary School.

She loved life and people. She loved to learn and was a constant teacher by word and example. Her home was a gathering place where everyone felt welcome and no one left hungry. The cookie cupboard was always full. She was especially happy when she was surrounded by her family. We adore her.

She is survived by her sons, Marlin Nile and David Albert, her brothers, Orlando Albert and Nolan Ray; 13 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her sisters, Lizzie Verona Carlsen and Marvetta May Kimball. Special thanks go to Marta and Edna for their loving care.

Funeral services will be held Monday, 12 noon, at the Holladay 1st Ward, 4568 So. Holladay Blvd. Friends may call Sunday 6-8 p.m. at the Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 So. State St., and Monday at the church one hour prior to services. Interment: Larkin Sunset Gardens.
