The Monticello Buckaroos completed their dream season Saturday afternoon by winning their first 2A state softball title with a 7-6 victory over defending champion Manti.
Monticello trailed the Templars with two innings left to play, but pitcher Carley Garner smacked a home run in the bottom of the sixth to tie things up at 6-6.After holding Manti scoreless in the top of the seventh, the Buckaroos pushed a run across in their at-bat to secure the victory and start the celebration. The Templars had been attempting to win their third state title in school history.
The win capped a strong state tournament run for Monticello, which had stumbled its way into the tourney with three disturbing losses to end the Region 13 season. The Buckaroos blew out Juab 14-0 in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday and scored the same amount in a semifinal victory over Morgan.
Manti 14, Grantsville 4: The Templars had little problem in putting away their region rivals and earning a bit of revenge. Manti's only region loss of the season came at the hands of the Cowboys.
Monticello 14, Morgan 4: The Buckaroos continued their strong play by stifling a Trojan team that had upset San Juan to move into the semifinals.
