2 DAVIS TEENS WERE MISSING, BUT THEY WEREN'T REALLY LOST

Twenty volunteers combed the steep canyons and foothills above Farmington all day Sunday in a fruitless search for two teenage boys who hiked down from the mountain the day before and were partying in Salt Lake City.

"Frustrating" is the way Capt. Jake Hunt of the Davis County Sheriff's Office described the search, which started around 7:30 a.m. Sunday. The two boys, one 16 and one 19, were dropped off at the mouth of Davis Canyon in Farmington Friday night. They planned to camp for the night and come out Saturday afternoon.

But they got up early Saturday morning and apparently decided they didn't want to stay there all day in the rain, Hunt said, so they hiked down, called a friend and went to a house in Bountiful, where they stayed.

The two boys, from Farmington and Fruit Heights, apparently decided to make the most of their time away from home and went to a party Saturday night in Salt Lake City, then returned and spent the night at the friend's house in Bountiful.

Their parents, meanwhile, had contacted search and rescue, which sent the 20 volunteers up the mountain Sunday morning.

The search was called off around 3:30 p.m. Sunday when the two teens finally called home, Hunt said, but the last volunteer searchers didn't get off the mountain until around 6 p.m. Sunday.

"I started to have some doubts around noon Sunday when we covered the area where they were supposed to be and didn't find any sign of them," said Hunt. "It's a bad situation. You're danged if you do and danged if you don't."

He said the father of one of the boys was very embarrassed and upset by the incident.

"There were a lot of hours and effort invested in that incident. It was very frustrating," Hunt said.

Hunt said the sheriff's office has never charged for a search, even for ones that are unfounded, and he doesn't see that changing in the near future.

"But we are looking at some other avenues on this, ones I'm not comfortable talking about yet," said Hunt. "There was some adult involvement on this, and we're talking with the county attorney about some possible charges," Hunt said.
