Civil War Battle

Bentonvillem N.C., a little community 17 miles west of Goldsboro, was the site of a stubborn Civil War battle March 19, 1865. It was fought between a confederate force of 24,000 under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston, and some 65,000 Union troops, headed by Gen. William T. Sherman.

Johnston, partially defeated, retreated to Smithfield.

The Union loss was about 1,600, the Confederate totaled some 2,700.
