The easiest way to avoid telephone fraud is to hang up and the easiest way to avoid mail fraud is to throw it in the garbage, according to a new television campaign produced by the Utah Department of Commerce in conjunction with Video West Productions.
The three television spots that last 15 seconds each will be aired during the summer.Kim Morris, department communications director, said statistics show that telephone and mail fraud cost consumers $40 billion annually, and the campaign is designed to alert people to the dangers of the problem.
One spot shows a variety of tools and a voice says these items are associated with robbery by most people. The next shot is of a telephone with mail sitting nearby, and a voice says the mail can be a more common form of robbery.
Morris said the campaign is aimed at people over 40 years old and especially elderly women, because statistics show these are the people most often victimized.
